My brother David and I buried our father today. Before that, we hadn’t really spoken since he voted one way in 2016, and I voted the other. The silence in Dad’s old Ohio house was heavier than the damp November air. David, with his Seattle tech-money coat, and me, in the same worn flannel I’ve had for years, were two strangers tasked with dismantling a life. The final stop was the garage.

I live two time zones away from the house where I learned to braid my hair at the kitchen table and say grace before dinner. After Dad’s funeral, Mom said she was fine. She packed the flag the VFW folded for her, moved to a little bungalow with a porch swing and a bird feeder, and told me not to fuss. “I don’t need much,” she said. “Just a good rocking chair and a view.”

My father, the man who built bridges for a living, started to forget my name. So I booked a flight, rented a ‘95 Ford Explorer, and drove him six hours to a memory.

The cassette jammed at the word “Mom,” and in the soft hiss of tape I finally understood why my mother never once turned off the porch light.

It was close to midnight when I saw him, a thin silhouette on the river bridge where truckers downshift and the wind cuts like a blade. My headlight swept past and caught a pair of sneakers too close to the edge, fingers bent around the cold rail.
