We were college sweethearts, my baby daddy and I. At that age, we didn’t have any responsibilities except to study and be young. It was fun. The love bloomed like roses in spring. We were so sure that the future belonged to us.

Although things were not perfect, we handled our problems amicably. I don’t remember a time when he got angry and raised his voice at me. That was one of the things I loved about him. Whenever I saw couples arguing loudly or even involved in fistfights, I would count myself lucky, because my Jeffrey was as gentle as a lamb.
We made big plans. We spoke about all the ways we would spoil each other senseless after school. We planned our wedding even though we had zero rand in our account. We named our kids despite taking precautions to prevent unwanted pregnancies. After all, it costs nothing to dream when you are full of youthful exuberance.
After school, life began. I got a job and started a side business. He also started working in a salon. The plan was to save money and get married so we could start a family while we still had youth.
Three years down the line, I got pregnant. We were not done with the marriage preparations, but we agreed to have the baby.
We moved in together when the baby arrived and started living like a married couple. Even then, we were still fine. He was my support system and an amazing father to our child. The dreams we had in school were slowly taking place. The only thing we hadn’t done yet was get married. Everything else was going smoothly.
Until the changes began. He started coming home later than usual, was always smiling at his phone, hiding to make phone calls, among other things, men do when they start cheating on their women.
The first time I caught him, he begged till I forgave him. It became a habit after that. When I gave birth to our secondborn, he suffered a mild stroke. He could no longer go out and work. This also meant his womanizing ways changed.
In hindsight, I think I confused his inability to cheat with changed behaviour. I dropped everything and took care of him. Where didn’t I take him to? Which medications didn’t I buy for him? As for prayers, I was more than Hannah from the Bible, who prayed for a child until the priest accused him of drunkenness. I cried out to God in prayer day and night.
By and by, Jeffrey got better. I expected him to continue being calm like he was during his sick days. Boy, was I wrong? My man started drinking excessively. He resumed his work, but he stopped providing for us. Rather, he spent his money on other women he was cheating on me with.
When I confronted him, he beat me till my sister came to my rescue. After that, I moved away from him. I had lost my job by then due to COVID, so my sister and my dad helped me resettle. They also paid my kids’ school fees and our utility bills until I got back on my feet.

Now, my business is doing well. I am taking good care of myself, and the kids are also doing well. While I am trying to make progress with my life, Jeffrey is back. He says we should try again. He keeps talking about our dreams and the future of our children. “Don’t you want our children to grow up with both parents?” He says in an attempt to persuade me.
Each time he comes around to see the kids, he talks about how we can be a family again. I always shake my head and say, “No, I won’t go back to something that almost ended me.”
My Wife Has The Spiritual Powers To Detect Cheating
Besides, it would break my sister’s heart if I ever went back to him. I can’t let her down, especially when she is helping me get a job so I can have multiple streams of income.
My sister aside, domestic violence cases where I come from usually end up badly. I won’t do it. We have history, but my life is more precious to me than living out a youthful dream that turned into a nightmare.
